Seiko Vintage Information
Self winding watch owners such as Omega and Seiko how do you wind them up?
Do you have to shake them about daily or weekly? I recieved no instructions with the watch which is a Vintage Omega so any tips on maintenance would be appreciated?
Yes i thought of that but i would need to do left handed.
Its a 1968 Omega Constellation in black with the little star and no cross hair. I bought it because it was in my eyes a very good looking understated watch i intend to wear it as an every day watch. It has just been cleaned and now that i have worn it for a couple of days it seems to be keeping time well. Prior to this it was stopping just prior to midnight. I thought perhaps it was the date change mechanism that was the problem.
I like watches and think collecting them may become a habit don’t know why though perhaps just an appreciation of the workmanship that went into making them. Like looking at them, is this strange?
Power reserve is generally somewhere around 40 hours for a new Omega. As the watch ages, this drops so it’s likely to be closer to 25-30 hours. You can either wear it regularly or just shake it a bit each day. The other option is to wind it some. Even an automatic allows for winding and it’s probably more gentle than the shaking. About 10-15 turns of the crown each day should get it done.
I would not recommend a watch winder for a vintage watch. It can be a little rough on the older movements unless you get the timing just right.
Another tip if you just received the watch is to take it in for a cleaning. It’s likely that it’s been a while seen it was cleaned and it’s a good way to protect the watch.
I actually collect old Omegas myself and don’t keep them wound on a daily basis. If you’re keeping it mostly as a collectible, you really don’t need it running all the time. Enjoy the watch.
