Hate weaning. I was excited for a moment my first lot of steam, mixing, freezing and labeling, but soon lost its appeal when my G & T was presented with a piece of ice, but no – the frozen food section of pea delivered the best Annabelle Karmel and pear puree.

During my second pregnancy until I read on Baby Led Weaning (BLW) and pledged to follow his philosophy and give my blender to the cabinet. The basic philosophy is: Pass the puree, purée, gradual transition to food in pieces, and simply present your baby with a selection of whole foods to play. Gill Rapley, a guru BLW ', explodes the myths surrounding the conventional weaning, saying that now that government guidelines are to be weaned at six months (previously, infants have been weaned at 16 weeks, and by 12 weeks) there is no argument to make purees, such as babies by then have acquired the capacity to manage food and chewing.

When my twins were just over four months, my health visitor recommended weaning them, since they do not thrive on milk alone. Later, this weight gain was attributed to inadequate medical condition, however at the time it was a reasonable proposal to do. I duly submitted my daughters with spoonfuls of mashed potatoes. They were not interested, he interrupted his routine – and mine – and my son began to demand food for babies instead of their usual meals. It was a disaster and I stopped after a week.

So six months after the start of the meeting of the babies at the table while we ate, giving pieces of fruit, steamed vegetables and bread with hummus or jam. At first they were not interested at all, then they wanted to eat, but I had the coordination of party – which was frustrating! Gradually improving motor skills, along with their appetites, and for seven months they were doing quite well.

At that stage a typical day begins with toasted, shredded wheat and fruit. Lunch and dinner would be whatever his older brother was having, which in turn was all they had eaten the night before! Happy Babies Tuck in a handful of spaghetti bolognese, scrambled egg (cooked until it is slightly elastic and easy to eat with the fingers), or chicken pieces and steamed vegetables. At eight months happily managed sausages whole or in pieces of beef stew, and was fantastic to see their fine motor skills developing until they were able to catch the peas they were chasing the table.

Since then I have abandoned some of the early baby-led weaning, I use a spoon, for starters – there is a limit to the amount of disorder that can handle! Baby Led Weaning is not for everyone, and I'm not sure that would have the confidence that have made the first time. You have to be content with the knowledge that your child is getting everything they need from milk; in its first year of food are simply exploring on the tastes and textures. You also have to be prepared for disaster! I quickly abandoned my high fabric-lined seats and bought the Ikea plastic that Stackable are beautifully easy to clean. But it is surprising how quickly they learned to eat well, and I found the weaning process as fun this time.

The benefits of BLW has been huge for me, I never had to cook food separately for infants, or mess around with blenders and freezer bags. They rarely get food and around me, six months and they were always able to make a sandwich with me, or eat a banana, despite having no teeth yet in one year old! Surprisingly, perhaps, have had much less nausea / suffocation incidents BLW, when I weaned my son in purees. Gill Rapley explains that encourage babies purees to "suck" the food of the spoon, much more likely to result in food going the wrong way, that when self-feeding baby. With three children from 2 to eat, the meals were quite chaotic, which was a tremendous benefit to teach girls to feed themselves same since the beginning, leaving your hands free to load the dishwasher, or even have a cup of tea myself!
